Psychotherapy is one of the most effective methods to make lasting improvements in a person’s mood and ability to engage meaningfully with the world. Sometimes the conflict or problem is obvious and can be easily identified. Other times, discomfort or painful feelings seem to come out of nowhere. In most scenarios there is more to be learned to help ease or eliminate these unwanted feelings. In my clinical work with a variety of patients I utilize both an active and a directive approach, similar to cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as a more exploratory approach creating a safe space in which to express yourself, as guided by psychoanalytic principles. Since I have trained in both modalities, I am able to provide evidence-based treatment with either technique. My approach is individual—determining what therapeutic approach works best for each patient in alignment with his/her personal goals.
Medications can be powerful tools to help alleviate one's symptoms. I can provide medication-only treatment or a combination treatment of medication and talk therapy. For the most pronounced and meaningful effects it is often useful to have therapy combined with medication treatment. My overall approach is to use as few medications as possible to achieve positive results; some patients will improve with multiple medications for an extended time whereas others will feel better with a more short-term approach. The goal is not to give you a prescription for the sake of doing something but rather to find the most meaningful solution to your problem.
